Sunday & Monday Morning of Dallas Trip

Feb. 26, 2012

Jan had a conference in Dallas. I was elected as driver. On our way down US69 near Eufala, OK, we ran up on this unit coal train stopped at a signal on the former MKT mainline to Texas. The shot was taken through the windshield at 75mph. Not a great shot, but it was the first train, a must to shoot for good luck.

This shot is not much better but I had to shoot "my engine". As we approached Stringtown, OK, I noticed this engine parked along the former MKT mainline. We turned around so I could shoot it. Why is it "my enigne"? My initals are SMC. This engine is labeled SMC.

We stopped at the Texas Welcome Center just across the US 75 Red River bridge, within sight of the Red River railroad bridge along side of the US 75 bridge. The flag poles in front of the Welcome Center showed the 6 flags that have flown over Texas.

Thie is the view from our hotel room in west Dallas looking back at downtown.

On Monday morning, I dropped Jan off at her conference in downtown Dallas. I then headed for I35E north in search of the RDCs on DCTA's (Denton County Transportation Authority) A-Train line. I finally found there track and got off I35E at Lake Dallas, TX and headed track side. Here we see a north bound train of 2 RDC-1s. Note the bright green LED signal about the cab end of the lead car in the going-away shot.

I then headed back toward Dallas and found this Park and Ride station in Old Town Lewisville, TX. Also seen is the schedule for trains at this station and the track looking north with a red signal denoting an approaching southbound train.

Here we see another train of RDC-1s heading for the Park and Ride at Trinity Mills in Carrollton, TX.
I got back into my car and reached the south end of the station at the intersection of Main and Railroad Streets. I would continue down Railroad Street for my next shots of RDC-1s and the DCTA shops.

The Denton County Transportation Authority shops are located along Railroad Street, seen here paralleling the tracks, between the Old Town and Hebron Park-n-Ride stations.

I caught this pair of RDC-1s just south of the shops.

The RDCs then stopped at the signal governing the crossover into the shops. They had to wait on the next southbound RDC set shown in the next image.

This pair of RDCs surprized me between the Shops and Old Town.

At the Hebron Park-n-Ride, I shoot toward the north, then the station, and then toward the south.

In this sequence we see the last southbound returning to and stopping at the Hebron Park-n-Ride.

My next stop was the Trinity Mills Park-n-Ride which is shared by the A-Train of DCTA and Green Train of DART.

A couple of views of the Trinity Mills station, showing the DCTA and DART tracks.

This is a southbound train toward downtown.

The next train was a northbound train, first seen in the distance on the elevation.

I then drove to the area around the old Carrollton station and found this ice refer.

Here is that restored former SSW station.

A Dallas, Garland & Northeastern (DGNO) engine terminal is near by and had these two unit, one a genset with 2 diesel/generator sets and an ex-SP SW1500 lettered for parent Rail America.

I then headed to the town of Frisco, TX and the depot museum and Heritage Center.

On display between the station and the tracks of the BNSF (former Frisco) is this former Frisco wooden caboose.

Also on display was this steam engine labelled Frisco 19. The real Frisco 19 was a 2-10-2. Lake Superior & Ishpeming #19, one of several ex-LS&I steamers that found an extended career with the Grand Canyon Railroad. #19 later was retired and displayed by GCRR at their Williams, Arizona station. It was subsequently acquired by the Frisco Heritage group for display at their "townsite." The "Frisco" on the cab refers to the town site, not the railroad.

I discovered that the Frisco Heritage Center was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The city of Frisco puts "coonskins" on everything from street signs to their old water tower
