51 Years of Railroad Photography |
We drove I90 from Bozeman to Billings, MT. We spotted this unit coal train headed for the mines. Note the CN units on front and rear. |
After checking into the hotel, I went looking for pictures and drove west to the Montana Rail Link yard at Laurel, MT. |
Here is an overview of the MRL yard. |
One of the MRL switchers. |
This is a BNSF loaded unit coal train headed westbound from the mines. |
This train appeared along side of the highway back into Billings. |
On my way into downtown to railfan, I discovered this train westbound leaving Billings. |
When I arrived downtown, I found a BNSF loaded unit train. |
This is the former NP station in Billings. |
Caboose display at the west end of the station. |
I found a spot east of downtown to watch trains. I found this switcher returning with some cars. |
Then I shot this eastbound empty unit coal train. |
I found this switcher working the yard west of downtown. |
This eastbound piggyback train passed me and stopped at a red signal near the Yellowstone River bridge. |
Next was this westbound grain train. |
An eastbound grain train. |
I drove west of Billings and caught this train again. |
Next was this loaded unit coal train. |
This NP steamer is on top of this mountain. |
I got stopped at the crossing by the MRL yard switcher in Billings. |
A loaded unit coal train is seen passing the former passenger station in Billings on its way to British Columbia. | ||
My next train was a loaded unit coal train, one that I shot near the same spot the day before heading to the mines empty. |
As we headed east on I90, I spotted this unit coal train in the distance. |
This shot of the UP roundhouse in Cheyenne was taken from across the tracks at the former passenger station. The back shop building is in the background to the left. The bottom image shows the turntable area. |
The Cheyenne passenger station. |
In Cheyenne it appears that painting large cowboy boots is the custom. |
I was passing by a large window just as a stack train was passing by eastbound. |
A better view of the back shop building taken from a second floor window of the station. |

We then went looking for Union Station from which I had ridden behind UP 8444 in 1972 and the Denver Zephyr with David Mc Donald in 1975. |
East of Byers, CO we encountered a meet of two unit coal trains. Please excuse the poor shot with the bad glare on the windshield of this meet. We did get ahead of the loaded train at the Peoria Crossing exit and got some decent shots of the train. Note the grandstand of the Byers Race Track in the going away shots. |
A little further east we see this westbound empty unit coal train. |
We left I70 for back roads to Hutchinson, KS. We found this former station at Ellenwood, KS. |
At Lyons, KS, we found this former Santa Fe caboose along the highway. |
Another nice former station at Sterling, KS. |
This is the former ATSF station in Hutchinson, KS where, in 1958 on a visit to see friends from Van Buren, they took us to this station, and we watched the new Hi-Level El Capitan make its scheduled stop. In late spring of 1960, I got off the Grand Canyou on a visit with these friends and to take a date to her senior prom. It is now a coffee shop and stop for Amtrak. How far the mighty have fallen. |
The route of the Golden Statet is now a part of the Union Pacific. Here is some power at their yard office. |
In driving to a Christian book store on the east side of downtown, we found these engines at the Great Plains Transportation Musuem. |
The first image below is of what I suspect was Union Station. The second image also appears to have been a railroad station. Any one know for sure? Which railroad? |
