Retirement for me means more time to do things that I had never done. One of those thing was Marti Gras. With family in the New Orleans area needing help with child care, Jan and I headed south to experience this event. Monday was a day with little activity for Mardi Gras. The weather was great and there was something else I had never done, shoot trains on the drawbridge at Manchac.

When we arrived at Manchac, LA at 1:38pm, the drawbridge was on its way down in anticipation of the arrival of a train. It was time for the southbound City of New Orleans.

Amtrak #59, the City of New Orleans, arrived at 1:48pm, right on time.

We then shifted to the north side of the waterway and found that the drawbridge was starting back up.

At 2:21pm, the drawbridge is seen on its way down for the northbound Amtrak #58, the City of New Orleans.

At 2:35pm, the northbound City of New Orleans appears after meeting the southbound train somewhere towards Kenner, LA.

"Fat Tuesday"

"Fat Tuesday", last day before the beginning of Lent, meant lots of parades (3) and catching lots of beads thrown from the floats. Your truly got his share. A few strings of beads are shown here around his neck.

McComb, MS

The former IC station in McComb serves as the Amtrak station, railroad museum, and Chamber of Commerce.

There is an out door exhibit as part of the railroad museum which has recently gotten a cover. This cover is designed for viewing in the afternoon from the parking lot with the structural support on the track side. That creates problems for photography in the morning like my visit.

A typical IC concrete coaling tower still lises over what remains of the yard in McComb.

While shooting the museum exhibits, I heard a horn. Soon this southbound train appeared. I had to settle for a back lit shot to avoid crossing active tracks.

Grenada, MS

We got off I55 at Grenada. This string of units is new power for the Grenada Railway.

This GE appears to have come from the UP.

This GE has a Canadian style wide nose.

This train sitting on the main line in Mablevale, AR., down the main from our stop at the "One Track Mind" hobby shop. It is being helt out of the yard in North Little Rock. Note that the lead locomotive is form TFM, the Mexican subsidary of the KCS.

Stilwell, OK

The former KCS station in Stilwell, OK has been preserved as a visitor center and museum along side of US59.

Memphis, TN

After teaching an "Introduction to Nanotechnology" to 4 high school chemistry classes at Memphis University School in east Memphis, I followed the NS back to Mid-Town. As I approached Forrest Yard, I discovered this loaded unit coal train.
