This door was used by Frisco Kansas City- Florida Special Pullman passengers to reach Track 6 from the Central Station upper concourse, photo from 1962. Most of the time the Pullman would be straight ahead or to the right out this door, fouling Track 7. Sometimes the rear Pullman would even extend to the Calhoun Street bridge. |

It is 6:40pm on Saturday, August 8, 1964, and the era of the Rock Island "Budd Car" has ended in Memphis. Earlier this afternoon, RDC #9002, operating as train #24, completed the last run from Little Rock to Memphis, ending a legacy that began with the Choctaw Rocket in November 1940. The photographer, waiting to return to Little Rock on Rock Island #21, happens to glance up at the train board and sees a station employee removing the "Choctaw Rockette" signs. The board for train #23 is already gone, but he has time to hurriedly snap a photo before the train #24 sign comes off. In a few hours, Rock Island train #21 will carry #9002 back to Little Rock, completing the operational cycle for one of Memphis' more unique passenger operations. |
