Duluth Missabe & Iron Range

This is the last of the 2-8-8-4 Yellowstones constructed for the DM&IR. Although it did not have as many wheels as the UP Big Boys, these Yellowstones were more powerful as seen in Two Harbor, MN on May 26, 2007.

While at the Minnesota Welcome Center along I-35, I heard this train making its way down grade on Thompson Hill into Duluth.

As we left the Duluth area, we spotted this ore train on the former DM&IR ore dock in West Duluth, May 27,07. There are two SD45-T2s and one SD38-2.

As we prepared to leave Virginia, MN to head back to Duluth, we saw a northbound empty ore train led by these two SD45-2s.

At Fairlane, MN, we got this loaded ore train coming from the mine.

Note the steam rising from the hot taconite pellets in the ore cars in Proctor yard.
