50 Years of Railroad Photography
1960-2010

Oct. 9, 2010

I had a great time in Tulsa on the morning of Oct. 9, 2010, Jan's birthday. Jan had a church meeting in the morning. We left Tahlequah about 7:30am, I dropped her off at 1st Christian Church in downtown Tulsa, and was track side at Cherokee Yard by 9am.

There is a large parking area near the 17th St. crossing at the north end of Cherokee Yard. You can park across from the wye which leads to the Avard Sub used by the transcon trains. As I arrived I just missed a eastbound stack train coming off the Avard Sub.

The action began with a trimmer set of power making a switching move.

The last shot of the trimmer set shows an eastbound freight on the north leg of the wye to the Avard Sub. This train pulls around the wye and across the Arkansas River bridge before backing into the yard on the nearest track.

In the meantime another trimmer power set has taken a train around the south leg of the Avard wye before backing into the yard.

A westbound stack train has pulled up to the 17th St. crossing to chnage crews.

An eastbound freight then comes out of the yard with 4-units in 3-paint schemes.

The local power pulls up and stops along side of the power that arrived earlier from the Avard Sub.

The westbounnd stack train that changed crews at 17th Street is now heading out the Avard Sub.

The power that led the train from the Avard Sub earlier now cuts off its train and heads for the engine terminal.

The switcher set is seen taking a cut of cars across the river. It will return and make a second trip during my morning of railfanning.

This trimmer set is switching the north end of the yard and is seen pulling and then backing into the yard.

Another westbound stack train with a few "pigs" on the rear is seen taking the north leg of the Avard Sub.

The switcher set is seen returning from the other side of the river.

I took the 23rd Street overpass over the yard to run some errnads.

Upon returning to track side, the switcher set is taking another cut of cars across the Arkansas River

The next train was a westbound with an interesting power set, a NS unit in the lead with 2 CSX units following.

Next came another eastbound stack train with "pigs" on the rear. This train was led by one of the new GEs with A-1-A trucks that can be converted into B-truck configuration by raising the center axle, note the extra air cylinders on the truck side frame for this purpose.

Our switcher set is seen returning again after delivering its cars.

Before leaving the yard area, I make a quick pass through the engine terminal area.

These switchers serve the refinery just north and west of Cherokee Yard.

Upon crossing the Avard Sub, I had noticed a headlight to the west so I headed to the first crossing.

Back at the 17th Street crossing, the NS/CSX power set has cut off its train and is heading to the engine terminal.

Heading back across the Arkansas River into downtown Tulsa, this US66 monument presented itself and demanded that a picture had to be taken.
