FEMA Evacuation Trains

Sept. 2, 2008 To help with the evacuation of people from New Orleans, FEMA operated 2 trains from there to Memphis ahead of hurricane Gustav. The FEMA-1 train set sits on the 2 tracks that remain at Central Station. The trains had to enter Central Station by going first to Woodstock, north of Memphis, and then pulling down into the station using the two units on the rear of the train. The sink hole that closed Central Station to normal operations resulted in the tracks and road to the parking lot to be removed while repairs were made.

Sept. 3, 2008 After unloading, each train set was taken to the former IC North Yard for servicing. Here we see the FEMA-2 train set moving back to Central Station to prepare for the first load of passengers to return to New Orleans. We see one of the CDOT cars sitting on the viaduct over Calhoun Street just north of Central Station.

Sept. 3, 2008 Meanwhile FEMA-1 is in North Yard being serviced. The refrigerated materials handling car is apparently used as a commissary.

Sept. 5, 2008 To help with the evacuation of people from New Orleans, FEMA operated 2 trains from there to Memphis ahead of hurricane Gustav. The FEMA-1 train set sits on the 2 tracks that remain at Central Station. The FEMA-2 train set has already returned to New Orleans with its passengers. The sink hole that closed Central Station to normal operations is out of sight to the right of this scene. The sink hole closed the parking lot for the station and its occupants, including Central Station Police Precinct, thus the patrol cars parked on the grass. The vacant lot is the site of the former IC/SSW in-bound and out-bound freight houses and mail handling building.
