Ft. Smith/Van Buren Bridges

There were four bridges across the Arkansas River in the Ft. Smith - Van Buren area before the Kerr-McClellan Navigation project, two railroad and two highway. The Frisco built a bridge between Ft. Smith and Van Buren, and the Iron Mountain built one between Ft. Smith and Oklahoma. In addition to these two railroad bridges, there was the Ft. Smith and Van Buren bridge and the Ft. Smith Free Bridge for vehicular traffic. The Ft. Smith and Van Buren bridge carried streetcar traffic between these two cities.
