44-Class C420s

On May 27, 1987, Jim Christenberry and I found this C420 getting painted to become A&M #44.
The painter is working on the radiator area at the rear of this C420.
Once inside the shop, Randy Hannold starts to remove the tape and covering over the strips.

A&M #44 is getting a bath in this view on Oct. 12, 1987.

On Oct. 14, 1987 I caught A&M #44 was leading a transfer across the Arkansas River bridge. The first view shows the bridge fully raised followed by views of it dropping into place for the train to pass.
I then caught the train at the crossing of AR 59T.
I next caught the train at the south end of North Yard.
This view shows the new herald on the nose of C420 #44.

I caught the same consist in Ft Smith on Oct. 15, 1987.

As part of a railfan trip. the A&M had a trailing freight exit the tunnel and then follow our special with a RS-1 and the former Boston & Maine wooden combine.

C420 #44 is seen heading south from the engine terminal in Springdale on Dec. 3, 1988.

The Fort Smith freight is seen arriving in Ft. Smith on May 16, 1990.

The friehgt bound for Ft. Smith is seen south of Mountainburg on July 23, 1990. The former iron ore hopper at the end of the train were used to haul sand from Van Buren to the NW AR metroplex.

C420 #44 is seen going to work in Springdale in Oct. 1990.

C420 #46 is seen in Ft. Smith on Oct. 14, 1987.

The transfer is then seen preparing to levave Ft Smith on Oct. 15, 1987.
The transfer is then seen coming around the connection between the A&M and UP in Van Buren.

This is a typical consist of the early days of the A&M such as on June 13, 1988.

Our C420 is seen at Greenland, AR on Aug. 16, 1988.

The Ft. Smith turn is seen passing through colorful Fayetteville, AR on Oct. 17, 1988.
I next caught the train along US71 in Greenland, AR.

I next shot #46 in Fayetteville on Oct. 21, 1988.

Snow! in Springdale, AR on Dec. 28, 1988. Later that evening I rode the Monett turn to find deep snow there.

C420 #48 is seen about 1 hour before it received the first herald on Oct. 12, 1987.

Our subject C420 is seen with its new herald and the A&M caboose on March 9, 1988.

Four C420s are seen heading a freight southbound by the station in Fayetteville, AR on June 20, 1988.
